linux and vmware

Greetings,

When installing a guest Linux distro (fedora core2) using the 2.6 kernal, it appears to install ok, but when I get to the root login prompt , it keeps appearing and then going away, making any command line input difficult. I can never get X to start, even after installing vmware tools. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance.
