linux acpi- general questions

Hi,
i have some questions about linux ACPI (2.6.x). I am interested, because i am setting up a server at home and i want it to consume as less electricity as possible.

Does it need configuration? Or does the ACPI daemon takes care of "everything" - CPU, RAM, etc?

I thought ACPI needs APM working underneath it. However, i read in a tutorial, that APM must have been disabled prior to installing ACPI. If this is true, then how does ACPI know what's going on? Does it have direct access to the BIOS too?

How do i know the ACPI functions, which my computer supports? There are some compatibility lists, which however refer to laptops.

Thanks

ACPI like APM requires support at the BIOS level. If your machine is ACPI compliant then you can use ACPI to your advantage. Ofcourse, ACPI capabilities is not the same on all machines. Some machines come with hardware that supports and extends ACPI and thus provide efficient/intelligent features/capabilities. APM is the preedecessor of ACPI. ACPI is the new generation power management interface which is far more superior to APM.

As far as hardware compatibility is concerned, sorry, I can't tell you if your machine is supported. If you have the manuals or do some googling or even call up the dealer/manufacturer, may be that will help you learn about the ACPI capabilities of HW you got.
