so I just was introduced to linux a year ago....and let me tell you I love it. I really love the fact that it is FREE!!! who doesnt love free!!. I recently watched a video about the history of linux, where Linus Torvold told the whole story of how he developed Linux. I noticed that he kept referencing UNIX and how he learned all about it and that he wanted an opperating system that behaved like UNIX but he couldnt change it to his liking. So he started making his own. soooooo he made linux a year later.......and its been growing ever since because of its "open source" baseline. NOW!!!!!! I started researching pre Linux OS UNIX....and UNIX has the same commands as Linux.....or let me rephrase that....Linux has the same almost identical as UNIX commands (which one came first). Then I found that Linux has been accused of taking UNIX code and what not.....So this brings me to me point. Is Linus (Linux) a fraud????? I understand that not every component of Linux doesnt behave just like UNIX....and that his OS was designed for different hardware....but come onnnnnnnn....it took him a YEAR to develope it??????? are you kidding me!!!! ...that doesnt raise ur eyebrow??? and I also understand that UNIX has been bought and sold and merged so many times that really the company that owns it isnt part of the original design...If I was the original designer of UNIX I WOULD BE PISSED!!! Ya everyone hates paying for software and OS's but if your going to write a OS that is free...you cant reap the benifits by just taking an idea and improving on it without having fingers pointed. Sounds like this is a case of the norm now days....like movies, songs, or anything els.....people cant come up with anything original so they just take something that has already been made and just tweek it...and claim it to be thiers and make mega $$. I know that I am going to get hate mail like crazy ...but come onnnnn think if you put in the time that UNIX engineers did to make UNIX and then some a$$ clown comes along and copies and pastes some code and add some stuff then gives it out for free to anyone and everyone. So next time you start Linux think of the people that worked alot harder than Linus did to start the idea that became Linux. ....to me the aspect of being free blinds people from the real truth.
but I guess the biggest argument against this is that software shouldnt be able to be copyrighted and whatnot...but not everything cant be free...Its been proven that large societies cant grow and sustain themselves on a "barter and trade" (open source) economy.its impossible for us to live were everything is "open source"
What is your actual question? This looks like more of an editorial rant to me. As to whether it's possible for us to live where everything is open source check out Google Android. There's also another open source phone system, but I can't remember the name. You should also look up the source for Open Office.
ummm if you dont know the question than I guess you dont understand the severity ....Is Linux made (stolen ideas)from UNIX or is that idea just the accepted norm

and what does knowing about other open source platforms and programs have to do with the original point...did Linus steal UNIX main OS ideas?
I sorry i have made you bored by talking about something that is not the norm of ....about how you customize your Linux appearance or fix your network card ....I guess my topic is too deap for yall. ....Its actually a very controversial topic .....i guess its only for the people that really care about finding out the real truth for themselves. yawwwwnnnnnn!!!
I don't have to reason it. It's not up for opinion. The facts show that he didn't steal anything. Furthermore, you should understand that Linus only wrote a kernel. The user commands (such as fdisk, mv, etc) are from GNU. If you had done just a bit more research, you might have discovered that the proper name for Linux is GNU/Linux, but most people drop the GNU part.
It appears that you really want to be righteously indignant about a most terrible theft, but, really, there's nothing to see here. Move along.

Chill out. It's not a controversial topic. Seriously. Nobody is trying to cover 'the real truth.' It's not really a topic for The Sun (=a British tabloid). The kernel was written by Linus, and as Quakeboy said, the rest is GNU.
If you are that concerned about it do this: download the source and compare the two. Essentially you can obtain the earliest possible source of BSD Unix and the first Linux kernel source and decide for yourself.
I don't think anyone has ever tried to claim that Linux was original in concept, Linus, always mentions Minix for example, and the most used adjective to describe linux is unix-like. Sooooo get off the soapbox, and if you feel like calling someone a fraud, please be prepared to prove what you say.
so this kernel that Linus designed ....which kernel is it? what is the name of his kernel he designed..... and how many different kernels are out there?
