linmodem install compile problem

I am new to Linux and just installed Fedora Core 4. My first task was to try and install a linmodem driver for the modem in my Thinkpad T23 notebook. Along the way I learned that I had to install and prepare the source, install rpm-build and a compiler and a .config. I finally got that all done and tried to install the slmodem-2.9.9e-pre1 dirver. When I ran the make command it worked but I could see some errors as it scrolled by and in the page it ended at. A few of the errors include:

Syntax error before ‘{‘ token
Syntax error befor ‘if’
Derefencing pointer to incomplete type
Unkown field ‘release’ specified in initializer
Unkown field ‘llseek’ specified in initializer
Unknowne field ‘poll’ specified in initializer
Error ‘MOD_DEC_USE_COUNT’ undeclared (first use in this function)
Buffer undeclared

I am using gcc compiler

Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is?

If you haven't already be sure to download, unpack and run the excellent scanModem script from

Wade through the copious output files - they will tell you exactly how to get your winmodem working. Of course you might have already done this.

If you're lucky like me (different laptop) you will be able to use slmodemd with alsa - this comes precompiled - so you won't have to sort out your compile errors.

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I've been under the weather lately and had to put this project down for a few days.

I had run the scanmodem but for some reason used a thread from elswehere to try to tackle the problem - the instructions were shorter I suppose.

I've had a chance to read through all the scanmodem output files and I think I can use the ALSA method but it is not real clear just how to go about this.

Since you have done this could you briefly describe what is involved in this. I see they tell me to download the gcc version of the driver which is a compiled version.
