Lilo Problem

Hey all,
here is my problem: I have installed Windope XP.
I had a 10G partition on my hd, and I installed windows on it. The problem is that I don't have any more Lilo booting at the begging, My system launches immediately Windows and I cannot choose if I want to run Windows or Linux.
This were my partitions on my hd:
hda1 : free space (where I installed Windows)
hda5 : Gentoo (reiserfs)
hda6 : free space (ext3)
hda7 : Swap

I'd like to make Lilo boot again, I'm writing this message from my Windows... I'm so sad I made this huge mistake. Can someone help me please, I had some really important documentation on my Gentoo partition.
My lilo was installed on my MBR.

Do you think if I boot a live cd of any distro, the I mount my gentoo partition, copy the /etc/lilo.conf then put it on a floppy I can make it again available? What could be the right manipulation to do?

I have just read this tutorial too late :
http://66.249.93.104/search?q=cache:...ws+linux&hl=en

Can someone help me?
I quick answer would be REALLY appreciated, I prefer 10000000 times LINUX!

Thanks everyone,

fp.

You are on the right track. You should use a live CD to boot into your Gentoo system. Log in as root. Then edit /etc/lilo.conf to also include Windows in the boot menu. Then you run the lilo command:
lilo

The lilo command will replace the MBR and you will be using your new lilo.conf configuration.

Here is a lilo manual.

I do not see how I could boot on my Gentoo system, I have various live cd of many distros (ubuntu, dsl, gentoo, ...) which one shall I use, any one could be ok or I shall use a specific one, for example the Gentoo's one?

Thanks allot for your quick answer jailbait.

Hope I'll be going through this problem within tonight.

Cheers,

I tried doing this:
Boot with the live cd of Gentoo 2005.0.
mkdir gentoo
mount -t reiserfs /dev/hda5 gentoo/
cd gentoo/
emacs etc/lilo.conf
[add windows partition]
sbin/lilo
and then I get an error.
How can I REALLY boot on my gentoo system, does anyone know how I can?

Thanks for answering.

Well... wouldn't lilo look for /etc/lilo.conf rather than /gentoo/etc/lilo.conf?

So you might want to chroot or something. Like,
chroot /gentoo/ /bin/bash
and then run lilo.

Here I am, I succeeded in making work lilo I'm writing you from my gentoo partition!
All I didn't do is a chroot /gentoo/ that's why it didn't work at the beginning.
Thanks all for your help.

Cheers,

fp
