Lilo "L 99 99 99 99 99"

I know I am a n00b and this is my first post but I am really desperate.

Partitions:
C:/hda1 = Windows System Files
D:/hda2 = Windows Data
hda6 = empty space, recently formatted Linux
(I don't know what happened to hda 3-5)

I recently unintstalled Alcohol 120% off of my data Windows Partition. It prompted me to reboot, which I did. When I rebooted I got the error message L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99... I searched the internet to find this was related to the LILO boot manager. I couldn't figure out how to delete LILO as I foolishly reformatted my MandrakeLinux partition (I messed up the kernel) before deleting it. I didn't install LILO to the MBR, rather whatever the default is for Mandrake. I have tried to restore the MBR with no luck.

Basically, I need to uninstall LILO; PLEASE HELP!!!

Did you try

fdisk /mbr

If you are using XP, boot up with the XP disk, enter the repair console and use the 'fixmbr' command.

Windows98 and WindowsME use the 'fdisk /mbr' command. If you have Windows98, do you have a windows rescue floppy to boot up with? This can be prepaired at a different Windows98 computer if you don't. The fdisk command is on the disk.

reinstall lilo, always works for me. Find the utility that does that for your linux distro.

As for the first two posts I did already try that.

For the third one I didn't want to reinstall Linux (I forgot to mention that; sorry).

Thanks anyway you guys but I guess what happened was when I deleted the partition with PartitionMagic it didn't really clear the data so I formatted the raw space with my XP CD and it deleted LILO.

Thanks anyways,
sigloiv
