LILO - keytatble read/checksum error

Hi.

I've seen several other threads on this topic, but none have been solved.

I have a MDK 9.1 box that's been running pretty well for over a year now.

I shut it down a few weeks ago because I was moving, and I am just now getting around to setting it up again.

When I turn it on, I get a blank black screen with the error message "LILO - keytable read/checksum error" at the top.

The hard drive busy light stays on, like it's doing something, but nothing ever happens.

This box has been error free, and I've changed nothing. All I can think is that maybe it got jostled in the move, and something happened to the hard drive.

The drive contains some pretty important stuff. Is there any way to fix this problem, and if not, how can I recover my stuff?

I read elsewhere on the web that I might not need a keytable. So I booted the box with Knoppix, and went to remove the keytable entry from lilo.conf.

Now when I'm in Knoppix's Root Shell, it says the filesystem is read-only whenever I try to edit the lilo.conf file.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions on either problem?
