lilo.conf using a backup kernel

how would one go about alterling lilo.conf so that if your primarary kernel doens't load your old one does?

You can't.. as if a kernel fails, it's already past the bootloader stage and you would have to restart manually. Lilo would have no way of knowing this and your system would not restart if a current kernel fails.. etc.
