Lilo
How much slower LILO makes booting?
f.eks. you choose Windows instead of linux, so will it add some seconds until Windows starts?
My stephfather claims that we wont put linux as Dualbooting OS with Windows, because it will take so much time to load either of systems.
Is this true?

Well, no its not true. I have a dual boot machine and when I select Linux it loads in about 30 seconds, though win2k still takes about a minute or longer..
And you can change the default time of the default image to boot in Lilo if you don't select which one you want to boot.

Gidday!
Lilo prolongs boot for as long as it takes you to select an OS :}
Or as long as the wait-time 'til your default OS boots ... which is 5
seconds in my case ... looking at winDOHs whopping 1:30 minutes
and Slacks 0:30 that's quite acceptable :) ... I boot Slack as default,
btw, and winDOHs is password-protected so the kids don't muck
around with it ;)
Cheers,
Tink

It'll probably help your step-dad if you explain the steps lilo goes through:
First, the the bootloader itself is written to the first sector of /dev/hda, the first harddrive. Typical lilo images are in the ballpark of about 1024 bytes... max!
It's not compressed at all, so the BIOS hands off to LILO normally. When you watch the word LILO get loaded accross the screen, that's the exact time it takes to load... how far it gets in spelling the word is how far its gotten in loading (great for debugging), The L and the O also indicate that its located the maps or kernel for whatever operating systems you have it set to boot to.
LILO or no LILO, once you hit enter on its option, its handing off to the operating system's map, which is the same as if the OS itself were first sector first track... the time should be identical.
Most likely this is a case of FEAR UNCERTAINTY AND DOUBT masqueraded as a legitimate concern.
My recomendation, save up and get a separate machine, something old for the ballpark of $200. The only way you're going to get legitamacy is to not have to share a box. Network your house, be the UNIX ninja. I would have done the same, but back when I lived with my 'rents a machine would have been a 486, cost $2000 and the Linux kernel was at .10
Cheers,
Finegan

And don't forget, whatever is the default OS to load, you don't have to type it in, you just hit enter. Probably in the nanosecs to push that button to start the boot process from there..

Thanks, now let just cross fingers that your replys will help Mandy find new, bigger apartment with bad neighbour.
Luckily Mandy is nerd, so he's never going out to learn bad habits of Mr. Windows.
