lightweight distro and window manager suggestions
 

I am building my second linux box, and its going to be run on an old Pentium 75 box / 64MB / 5.4GB / 10/100.

I am trying to decide a good distro to use, I am farmiliar with Redhat amd MDK. I am considering maybe using a debian based distro, just to learn more.

Anyways, I am looking for suggestions on a lightweight, quick distro and a lightweight window mamager. I dont need anything fancy like KDE, just something that will not be too slow.

Mainly it will be accessed remotely, but I would like a gui for when I am in front of it.

I have tried Damn Small Linux on it, and it runs reasonable well.

XFCE and IceWM are pretty lightweight.

I've got a box of similar vintage that runs Slackware with Fluxbox as the WM. While command line is fine, lets just say the graphics are a bit slow.

Slackware and Fluxbox would definitely get my vote.

P75s are Socket 7 aren't they? I've just had a quick look on ebay(.com) and found a 200MHz Pentium for $2.95 (item 3481262855 if you're interested - hurry though, doesn't last for much longer). Got to be worth thinking about... :)

Vector Linux would work better right off.
You might be happier with Debian or Slack if you do not mind doing some hand configuring upfront and know enough to make some software choices.
The RAM and hard drive size are not that bad. The processor is okay. (Hey, better than a 486.)

I just remembered, I had already upgraded the chip with an intel overdrive processor in '98 or so so, I'm currently running at 166MHz. I might go for a faster chip a little later, just going to use what I've got for now.

I have another box that I've got MDK on. Athlon XP 2200+ / 256MB / 40GB etc.

This was just an experiment with old hardware. Plus if I can get this to work, Im going to help a few friends dig their old boxes out of the closet and play around w/ linux.

Ill look at some of the distros listed above.
