Lifespan of 32 bit Linux?
Hi, I wonder how long can we expect 32 bit Linux to be supported, in terms of 32 bit distributions, 32 bit Java from Sun, other applications, codecs, technology, etc, that eventually will force a move over to 64 bit hardware.

About 2-3 days. By Friday of this week everybody will have a 64-bit kernel running on their 64-bit systems.
|
I don't see support for 32 bit systems dropping off anytime soon. The vast majority of computer systems are still 32 bits. Even though current intel processors use EMT64, they otherwise are still very much 32 bit systems.

My machine is 64 bit, 3 years old. I'm still running 32 bit operating systems. Why? 64 bit software is wayyy behind 64 bit hardware.
|
while i'm sure 64-bit software develops all the time, the issues still evident in running 64-bit OS (Linux or Windows) suggests to me that it is not about to kill of 32-bit OS anytime soon.
