I am trying to get IDL to work on my Linux Red Hat 8 computer. I've got it almost all the way working, but then I get a fatal error. The Tech Support people told me i need libstdc++.so.6 but I don't know how or where to get it. I'm a total Linux n00b and my professors who were helping me ditched me for the week. I have located libstdc++.so.5 , but I do not know how to update that.
Red Hat 8 is an ancient release. Doubtfully you will find libstdc++.so.6 for RH8, unless you compile it from source. It should be a panic, anyway. If you want to spare the headache, consider to install a more recent Linux distribution.
just save the data and custom config files .The things you do not want to lose, things like that . then reformat the drive and install RHEL 5.3 or CentOS 5.3
