lean and mean distro

I want to set up one of our older boxes as a dedicated internal mail server, which will collect mail from several isp account through pop and make it available to users through imap.
What distro to use and what mailserver?

any distro would do as long as you just installed the packages you need. As for mail servers, exim, sendmail and postfix seem to be the popular ones, but this depends on the distro that you choose to install. For pop3 and imap, dovecot, popa3d and cyrus-imap seem to do the job fine.

I keep hearing the same names being mentioned, but i cant help but think that most of these are overkill for what i am trying to do. I am not planning on setting up my own mailserver on the web, but just for internal use.
External mail will continue to go via our ISP's mailservers.
I had a look at extremail, but that doesnt seem to cater for that either. I have a windows package called Mdeamon that does pretty much what i want it to do and i am looking for something similar.
