Large Hard Drives in RH 5.x K2.0.36

Have a RH5.2 (k 2.0.36) system that has an 8GB secondary IDE drive. It consistently has FSCK problems when booting. Forces a drop to single user and a manual FSCK of "hdb1". Thought we would fix this by setting up another IDE drive on a non-production system and then moving it to the one with the 8GB problem drive. So we picked a WD400 40GB drive. Unfortunately, we have exactly the same problem with the other system. I recall the former administrator had problems when moving from a 4GB secondary to the existing 8GB drive.

Does RedHat 5.2 with Kernel 2.0.36 have a problem with IDE drives larger than 4GB? If so, is there a way around it other than upgrading to a newer version? We have OS restrictions that will not permit this.

Kernel-2.0x series handle partitons up to 2TB, so I think ure looking at old BIOS limitations that would render say, a 10.4Gb drive to max 8.4.
Maybe appending the real CHS values from hdparm -i /dev/(drive) to ure kernel in lilo.conf can help.
