Lag from a scratched disc?

Sometimes when accessing a CD-ROM my system nearly freezes. I guessing this is because the drive is having trouble reading the disc, but is there any way to prevent this or limit the amount of time a disc will reread?

Do you have DMA configured and enabled in the kernel for that machine?

Yes, DMA is enabled. I sometimes have the same problem when trying to access my samba share.

Actually, I don't know if it has anything to do with either of these. Sometimes when I run ls or look at the directory tree in XMMS there is a long delay. Could this be from file system corruption?

Don't know - how heavily is the system loaded when the lag occurs? I have a fairly standard 3GHz machine, and it the system load goes above 6 it sometimes takes four or five seconds to load a directory into a Konqueror window for viewing. If your system is slower, it might take longer, proportionately to how heavily your system is loaded.
