Knoppix Restore

My system stopped working because I had a segmentation fault. I have decided to boot with a knoppix live cd so I can backup my files to a tape drive. I notice when I use tar, it copies the files from my mounted drive. So it I want to backup /var the actual path is /mnt/hdb2/var. When I do a restore later, how do I get rid of the /mnt/hdb2 so it will restore to the right driectory?

BACKUP:

cd /mnt/hdb2

tar cvzf /somewhere/var.tar.gz var/

RESTORE:

Code:

cd /somewhere

tar xvzf var.tar.gz -C /mnt/hdb2
