Knoppix Live CD

I have just downloaded the Live CD to have a look and found it to be not too bad for a complete beginner like me.

But I dnot really like the speed issue with runnin git from CD. Is there a way or version that can be installed? Or any distrobutions that are similar?

Cheers

You could try the Ubuntu live CD for speed. There's another live CD that loads completely into memory, so has no reading-from-disk limitations.

If you want to install to your hard drive, you might just as well install Debian, since that's what Knoppix is based on.

i like the knoppix install.. it suited me perfectly.

boot the cd as normal
ctlr-alt-f1 to get to command prompt
(if it doesn't say root@knoppix# then type 'su' so you are root user)

type knx2hdd
this will kick off the installer..
it'll install a lilo where you can boot either the 2.4 or 2.6 kernel.

You can install Knoppix on your hard drive. Boot up Knoppix, and open up a konsole terminal. Then type in the command:

sudo knoppix-installer

Knoppix.net has a lot of good documentation, including a detailed explanation of knoppix-installer.

There are three different styles of Knoppix hard drive install. Unless you have a special reason to choose otherwise, choose an "old fashionned Debian style" install. This will give you what is essentially a Debian system with a lot of Knoppix tweaks.

OTOH, a Knoppix hard drive install is a little touchy when it comes to updating software. You could instead go for a true Debian Sarge install (currently, Debian Testing). It won't have all of Knoppix's tweaks, but you can customize the interface to look like the Knoppix you're used to if you really want. (Knoppix itself is a highly customized Debian.)

To install Debian Sarge, you'll want to download the minimal Testing CD iso if you have a fast internet connection.

Ubuntu's live CD is different from Ubuntu's hard drive install; the former is based on Morphix, IIRC.

With Knoppix and Knoppix variants, the very same live CD is what gets installed on the hard drive.

I think knoppix-installer is the favored method of HD install, currently. It has a GUI interface, which may be preferable.
