knoppix file permissions

im fixing a friends computer(emachines w2247) he was running win xp, then a virus got into his computer and tore it up pretty bad. he got some jackleg to fix it for him. this guy installed an illegal copy of xp, therefore when he got on the internet it was flagged i guess and it would let him log back on to his os, it would say the software was not authentic. i also have an emachine, though its not the same model, i have a restore disk. i have tried to restore his sytem with my disc, but windows will not boot up on his box now. but thankfully it gives me a reason. his system file is corrupt(maybe because of our different processors?)
i am attempting to use knoppix 5.0 to get into his hard drive, delete his system file, and replace it with the one found on my win xp box. but knoppix will not give me permisson to delete the system file or the config folder. the file is in WINDOWS\system32\config directory. i tried to get into my root user to do this but knoppix doesnt have one i suppose. so i opened terminal 1.su 2.thankfully it logged into the root account without asking for a password 3. passwd 4. changed my password. but i guess it wont do any good if i cant get into root. any suggestions on how to get this box fixed??
thank you in advance!

"knoppix will not give me permisson to delete the system file or the config folder."

When knoppix boots it mounts every partition that it finds as read only. Umount the partition you want to work on and mount it again as rw.

"how do i do that?"

This documentation explains how to do it in the section "rescuing a non-booting Linux system":

http://www-128.ibm.com/developerwork...y/l-knopx.html

The order of the commands is:

su
umount
mount
