Knoppix - Advice for Persistent Files After Reboot
 

I plan to make Knoppix bootable on a USB flash drive. I want persistent files though upon reboot. Is the best way to do this:
1) to use the persistent KNOPPIX image (overlay feature) -OR-
2) to create a new partition for such data (on the same USB) [and if I do this one...how big should the partition for Knoppix be?]

What are the advantages disadvantes of each?

After having copied the system to flash, using the persistent KNOPPIX image (overlay feature) or an additional Linux partition, it is possible to also store files permanently in live mode. That way, personal settings and additionally installed programs survive a reboot.

The 1st option creates an overlay file within the FAT32 partition so you are limited to <4GB. The second option creates a separate linux partition to store the overlay file which means you can save more stuff. I would say the remaining space on the flash drive.

I have a flash drive which I just recently installed Knoppix on with the persistent storage. I let Knoppix make its two partitions and install like normal. Then, I resized the second partition (the one with all the free space) and created a third partition. I use the third partition for all my data.
