killing process at time limit

I'm currently writing a small program that takes some applications, and executes them, but with some constraints: The constraint I'm currently stucked in is that the program mustn't run in more than 5 seconds, so if for example it takes more than 5 seconds, I kill the process..
So, basically what I want to achieve, is to check, as soon as the program is executed, if 5 seconds are exceeded. If yes, it aborts, otherwise, I let the program run..
I'm using bash shell..

Hope it's clear,
Thanks in advance,
