Killing all X applications from login screen and going to textual mode
 
Hi All,

here's a small query I have. How do I kill all graphical applications (i.e. from the login screen) and go to textual mode without having to login?? I can do this once I am logged in - killall X but from the login screen, is there a series of hotkeys to hit that takes you to textual mode??

Hm, maybe I misunderstood your question, but if you want to kill all
X-applications, why not to kill the whole X-server? The hotkeys for that
action are: Ctrl + Alt + Backspace
When you started your server with startx from console you should get back
to textual mode...once started to X you can change to textual mode with
Ctrl + Alt + F1 (or F2, F3...) without killing X!

The reason that I want to killall of the graphical applications is because I have installed Linux Red Hat 9.0 on my Virtual Machine (running on winXP host) and I am having the same problem I had with Mandrake 9.1 The autoprobing has found my video card and monitor to be S3 Trio64 and Unknow monitor... My video card is actually an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro 8X AGP 128MB... The Red Hat OS has installed nicely but when I get to the login screen it looks unreadable... The screen is twice the width it should be and half the height. So I thought if I could download the ATI linux drivers and the latest XFree86-develop rpm's I could go into textual mode and do an installation from there. Right now I am unable to log into red hat due tot he fact that I can't read a thing from the screen...

Maybe you can tell me if I do an Interactive startup which command should stop in order not launch the Xserver... is it Xinetd??? or xfs???

Sounds that your X comes up with a huge resolution...maybe you
should change your Section "Screen" in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
(if it is there, I don't know with red hat)
If you use vmware you should have installed the vmware-tools to get
lucky with your display....

to kill X

goto a ctrl+alt+(f1-f6) then
#pkill X
