key command for switching worksapces?
Hey everyone, I use Suse and knoppix std regularly...and I was wondering if there was a "hotkey" combination (like maybe ctrl-right arrow) or somthing like that, that switches the current workspace your in. For instance, in knoppix std it allows you to name different workspaces, and sometimes it's a hassle to move the cursor to the bottom of the screen and click the little right arrow to change from "Mike's Workspace" to "Random Apps" (the names of 2 of my workspaces), especially when I'm typing in a console anyway. Any information would help out. Thanks guys

What window manager are you using?
|
CTRL + Fn for n=1,2,...n which is KDE specific
|
Yeah, for KDE it's Ctrl + F1 for the first, F2 for the second, and so on.

Thanks Moloko, that worked for KDE, but in Knoppix STD I use Fluxbox as the window manager and it doesnt work with that...

In fluxbox, you can scroll the mouse wheel over the desktop background to quickly change the desktop.
And you can assign keybindings with the keygrabber, but I don't know how you can do that on a livecd. I didn't read the whole fluxbox documentation, but it seems as if fluxbox doesn't have preconfigured keybindings for changing to another workspace. (I only used fluxbox for a few weeks, and when I used it I always used the mouse wheel to change desktops.) Mary |
I'm a fluxbox user, and the key cut is alt+Fx, where x starts at 1 and keeps going up to the number of workspaces you have.
I don't use STD, but in generic knoppix you'll need to add more workspaces as the default is one. It's pretty simple to do, especially if you have a mouse. Assuming you do just right click on the root window -> fluxbox window -> workspace list and left click on New Workspace. |
I *knew* there had to be something like that. :)

Yup, both suggestions worked great....I can't believe I never figured out the mouse wheel over the desktop. Thanks to eveyone that helped out. Also, goofyheadedpunk, Knoppix STD has 2 workspaces by defualt but creating more is beyond easy ..
-> workspaces -> new workspace (as you mentioned) Thanks again |
In KDE you can set you own key combinations:
