Question Kernel versions

Hi,
Just noticed that my Fedora's kernel version is 2.4 But why? Why is it not 2.6. It was available when I downloaded the ISOs. Is there something else than bigger number == newer version on kernel versions. Is that 2.6 not newer and better than 2.4 ?? Should I update to 2.6 ?? Or am I missing something here?

It wasn't available when they released that verison most likely you downloaded. Most likely 2.6.x will be included in another major release from Fedora.

But you don't have to wait for the distro's to release updates, you can happily update your own system.

Also most distros don't keep continuing updates on their iso's, they make releases and provide usually the latest stable software at that time its released and then start developing their next release, testing newer software along as they go, etc.

Ok, but what about 2.5 didn't see that anywhere just 2.4 and 2.6 did they jump over it?
And why does the up2date have 2.4.<newer than mine> on its list why not 2.6

2.5 is a development release of the kernel. All odds in the kernel are development. No distro that I have ever seen is going to put a release of the kernel that is development or in testing in their distro. This is why they most likely don't have 2.6 yet and haven't released a new version as of yet. They test and want a stable release for their versions. That's why distro's usually only have 1 to 3 releases a year, they don't just keep releasing everytime a package has an update or new release themselves.

Regards.
