Hi.
I just replaced my GIGABYTE BRIX N2807, which I have attached to my TV, with the Intel NUC NUC6CAYH, mostly to get the newer x265 compatible Intel Graphics HD 500. My old Brix had no issues at all, except the missing x265 support. But the NUC has issues getting into suspended mode, at least on Linux Mint 19, running on kernel 4.15. So I thought that I would try installing 4.18, which is in the repo.
When booting with this kernel, the UI does not work properly. The mouse moves around just fine, and I can right click the desktop and open some settings windows fine as well. But I cannot drag the window, and also the panel is rendered completely useless. I can open the menu, but then everything get's stuck, except for the mouse still moving around. Everything else stops working.
I have checked system logs, xorg logs etc. but cannot find anything. I also made sure that the GFX is running on the i915 driver, and not some vesa driver on the updated kernel. Lastly I tried installing the generic 4.20 kernel, but I get the same issues with that as well. The only one that is working, is the 4.15 kernel, except for the suspend mode.
The suspend issue is like this. I try getting it into suspend, the WiFi disconnects and the computer becomes unresponsive for a few seconds. Then WiFi reconnects and the computer becomes responsive again, but never goes into suspend.
I have no idea how to fix this, because I can't even find a way to debug the issue, when I can't find any logs that displays a problem. Worst part is that I have no idea if this is even worth my time, since I don't know if 4.18 or 4.20 will even fix the suspend issue.
I also made sure that the GFX is running on the i915 driver, and not some vesa driver on the updated kernel.
i915 is a kernel driver, not an X driver (DDX).
Code:
inxi -Gxx
reports kernel driver in use, DDX driver in use, and available alternative DDX drivers. Competent DDX drivers for Intel GPUs are Intel (no official release since 4 years ago; provided by xserver-xorg-video-intel package), and modesetting (not to be confused with KMS, though it requires KMS to function; newer technology; provided by the server package, normally used by default, unless xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed). Neither competent DDX will work without i915 working.

Can't find logs, or can't find any problems reported in any log? Did you look with journalctl?
i915 is a kernel driver, not an X driver (DDX) ...
inxi shows the same with all kernels, except for one thing. When booting the 4.18 and 4.20, it seams to be missing Display. This section says "x11" on 4.15, but is empty on the other two kernels.
Can't find logs, or can't find any problems reported in any log? Did you look with journalctl?
No, I can find the logs, just did not find anything useful in the ones I looked at. However jounalctl shows an unending loop of the following output after bootup.
.... mentions a DMC firmware message in the boot log. Perhaps this applies to you too?
This is an old post, regarding an old Ubuntu and kernel version. Firmware is up to date with latest versions.

I have already tried and have not been able to find anything on any of my problems. Nothing on the updated kernel issue and nothing on my original suspend issue. The only suspend issue I have been able to find, is people on older Linux versions having issues restoring from suspend, but I can't get into suspend in the first place, so not really helpful to me.
Does it not help to boot a previously installed kernel?
Sure, I am using it with the original 4.15 kernel. That's not the issue. I want to get 4.20 working, to see if that would fix the suspend issue, since a few sources concludes that it might. And I would really avoid installing a different distro that ship this kernel, simply to try the suspend feature.
I tried downloading a daily of Ubuntu 19.04, since it by default is running a newer kernel. I got the same issue with that one. However I thought it strange that the cursor was working, but the rest was sort of like frozen, so I tried, just for fun, to use a different keyboard and it worked. I have this small air remote with a keyboard on the back, and for some reason it freezes the UI when used on a kernel newer than 4.15. I also found that the freeze is just temporarily. I can move the cursor just find with the remote, the problem comes when I use one of the buttons. If I then take the other keyboard and wait 10 seconds, the UI unfreezes and I can use the computer just find with the other keyboard. But kernel >=4.18 does not like this remote for some reason.
