Question

I have Red Hat 6.2 as a firewall. I am running SQUID proxy and also forwarding email requests inside to the LAN exchange server. Everything else is closed. Recently the server stopped alowing console logins. I am able to administer from webmin. But I'm wondering if there is a memory problem. The error I receive when trying to log in is "kernel: Unable to load interpreter /lib/ld-linux.so.2.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like a shared library file problem. The .so files are dynamically linked library files. Have you rebooted the machine? Will it reboot at all?

I'm not familiar with the webmin program and what exactly it can do, but you need a way to telnet into the box. If you can't telnet nor console login, you will have to boot from a floppy and browse your filesystem that way.

The ld-linux.so.2 is a sym link to a particular version of a shared lib. Make sure that both the link is there and the file the link points to is there. Also check the file date and size of the library file. (ld-2.1.3.so numbers may be different.)

If you have recently copied or these library files it may be the case that the links never made it.

Hope this helps.

Gary
