Unhappy Kernel Problems - RH7.1 Kernel 2.4.5

I am rebuilding my kernel with the correct network driver support. I seem to be having problems. When I boot to my new kernel i get the message:

Loading linux-245 ...................
uncompressigng linux....ok, booting the kernel.

then nothing happens.

here are the steps i followed:

dowloaded the kernel source from www.kernel.org
file: linux-2.4.5.tar.bz2

copied the file to /usr/src

cd /usr/src
bunzip2 linux-2.4.5.tar.bz2
tar xvf linux-2.4.5.tar
make xconfig --- (I also have tried make menuconfig)
configured what was necessary
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/bzImage.new

df /
/dev/hda6 is mounted on /

cd /etc
edited lilo.conf

it looks like this:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
message=boot/message
linear
default=linux-245

image=/boot/bzImage.new
label=linux-245
read-only
root=/dev/hda6

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.2-2
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda6

then I ran
/sbin/lilo
/sbin/lilo -q

rebooted the machine, tried to load the new kernel and got:

Loading linux-245 ...................
uncompressigng linux....ok, booting the kernel.

then nothing happens.

I have read and re-read the kernel howto and tried this procedure more than once getting the same result. If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

when you change a kernel version, you need to copy the new System.map to the boot directory from the directory that the kernel was compiled in.

"make bzlilo" should do that if I'm not mistaken..

I've not gotten my recompiled kernel running though I've tried quite a few things to make it work..

And I've not been able to find any usefull answers on the net..
I have however found lots of answers ending with :

"Hope you have better luck than me"

now it really does not work

Thanks for the suggestions!

I tried copying the System.map over to the boot directory and that still gave me the same result as above.

I then tried make bzlilo from the /usr/src/linux directory and now by kernel tells me that it ran out of input data -- System halted.
this happens for both the original kernel and the new compiled one.

I guess it is time for a new load then try some more.
