Exclamation Kernel Problem - I think

Ok heres the deal. I installed RH 7.3 on my laptop. While it was installing, my pcmcia slot and everything else seemed to load without a hitch. After it was installed, rebooted into windows 98 to setup loadlin. While doing so I was faced with the question with what boot image to use. So I searched RH 7.3 Disc 1 for a boot image and used it. I had about 4 or 5 services not load when linux loaded. Afterwards I looked through my other linux box for boot images and found vmlinuz-2.4.18-3, the other boot image I used was just plain vmlinuz. I figured it was the image it was supposed to use, so I tried it. When I used it the system rebooted everytime. So I just now checked out my lilo.conf on my other box and saw that vmlinux-2.4.18-3 is exactly what it uses to boot. What gives? Should I be adding other command lines to loadlin? Here is the command line I'm using:

smartdrv /C (to clear memory)
loadlin vmlinu~1.18- root=/dev/hda2 ro

The image file looks wierd because DOS mode does not support long file names, so it looks funky. Anywho, any suggestions?

The problem of yours could be solved if you use the kernel image located in the boot partition(/boot).Your kernel image may be vmlinuz-2.4.18-3 or vmlinuz(maybe symlinked). As for the name in dos as you said only 8+3 filename length in dos.
