kernel problem

I'm wondering if anybody can help me out with this error. When compiling the kernel I recieve this error on bootup, cannot open root device label = /. Please append a correct root = boot option. Kernel panic VFS: unable to mount root fs on 00:00. If anybody can give me feedback on this problem that would help tremendously.

Hi.

Open /boot/grub/grub.conf and change the root=XXX bit to 'root=/dev/hdXX' where hdXX is your / partition (mine's /dev/hda2).

I've tried changing my / partition in grub.conf, but nothing has changed and it still gives me the same error.
