kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init!

trying to install linux on an old pc that was given to me.

P2-200
18megs (yeah, 18) ram
3 gig HD
2 rt8139 nics
3com 56k modem
old S3 vid card

every time i've tried to boot i get a kernel panic. so far i've tried gentoo and linux-from-scratch. same error, though different memory addresses depending on settings. this is on the boot-cd, no installation.

Code:
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 4612c4d0
 printing eip:
c01261bb
*pde = 00000000
Oops: 0000

CPU: 0
EIP: 0010:[<c01261bb>] Not tainted
EFLAGS: 00010286

...blah...blah...blah...

<0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init!
i've tried booting with noapm, noapci, noide, nousb, noanthalon, noraid, etc.

what can i do to install linux on this machine?

"what can i do to install linux on this machine?"

Your problem is that the installers are too big to fit into memory. Once you get past this install problem you should be able to configure a workable Linux on this machine.

I think that Slackware has the smallest installer of the current set of distributions, but I am not certain of that.

Otherwise take a look at old distributions. I had a SuSE 6.4 distribution that would install on your machine using the YaST1 command line installer but I already gave that away to somebody with a small machine. Similarly a Red Hat or Debian distribution of about 1999 or 2000 vintage should install on your machine.

Once you get an old distribution installed then you could upgrade the the latest releases of software a few packages at a time if you have the patience.
