Unhappy Kernel Panic!

When I booted my box, an error message appeared

/* Invalid session number or type of track */
/* Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to muont root fs on 03:02 */

How do I boot again Linux without having to reinstall it? Or are there any special parameters I should pass to the kernel before booting?

I have had this message before and I was told that it wasn't good. I had to use a rescue disk to boot. I know that at the lilo prompt (if you are using lilo) that you can type 'linux init-/bin/bash' to get into a shell as root then remount the files system like this mount -n -o remount /dev/hdXX (or what ever hard drive partition you need to). From there you can run a fsck on your hard drive to fix any problems. But I don't know if this would apply to you since you have a Kernal Panic.
