Kernel panic

I recompiled my kernel in a hurry like a dummy and when I rebooted I get the kernel panic. Is there any way around this besides reloading. It boots about half way. Could I have messed up the entry in lilo.conf Please help.

kernel panic is too general of a problem. Re-compiling your kernel is suggested.

Did you make a back up step, when you upgraded your kernel? Did you keep your working existing kernel?
