Kernel Installation Config

I'm compiling the kernel 2.4.27 for Red Hat Linux 9, and I was wondering if anyone knew which option under "xconfig" enables support for large vfat partitions.

Hello

Did you look under "file systems"?

This tread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=235927 mention large vfat as a reason for compiling a kernel. You might contact the user.

Have a lot of fun

Try using menuconfig. xconfig was terrible the last time I tried it. And yes, it has an option under File Systems for vfat. Don't be fooled by MS-DOS filesystem options. It HAS to be vfat.

In xconfig it's under filesystems -> DOS/FAT/NT Filesystems and you check the msdos/vfat support - and ntfs read support if you want it.

I mean LARGE vfat partitions, in terms of larger than 128GB. Thanks anyway though. Some versions support it and some don't.

You have to be specific Once upon a time fat32 was concidered 'large' compared to fat16

This would be dependent on the kernel, not sure what the latest support. Might have to ask the guys that do the vfat code.

I would not think it wise to have a fat32 filesystem that large.

The fat filesystem should really have stayed on the floppy drive

Just looking around, it seems windows has a lot of trouble with fat32 larger than 128GB... I assume XP does it and that's why you want linux to do it?

Have you tried linux to see what it thinks on the large fat32/vfat partition?

Yeah, I eventually want to convert the partition to ext3 or something, but I need to be able to read it in order to do that!

Huh? I don't follow. "Tried linux"?
I have done some snooping around now, and there seem to be a lot of problems, with this, yes. A lot of people with questions, not so many with answers. They included support for partitions of larger than 128GB in the kernel 2.4.25pre5-pre6 or something like that.

I would try asking on the actual kernel or filesystem list.

And I was just wondering if you actually had linux running and tried to access a large fat partition and had trouble, or whether you were just thinking about it.

Oh. Well, this isn't a hypothetical, I'm trying to get my slave drive to mount and it is not being very good about it. I've been trying to work it out on this other thread:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=237364
There are a bunch of specifics there, for anyone who could lend a hand. Thanks.
