kernel: Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive
 

Am running RH 9.0. I'm seeing a zillion of these messages in the /var/log/messages file.

If I run dsmesg, then that's all I see:

"kernel: Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive"

I've bounced the box several times now for general maintenance reasons but the message persists.

Any suggestions for isolating the cause would be greatly appreciated.

Need some additional info. Can you tell what device the message is refering to?

Also post your fstab. Verify your not trying to mount a removable device that is empty during boot. Any device like CD, floppy or zip drives should use the noauto option.

That's just it: I can't tell which device it's talking about.

BTW: I added the first line when I installed a second harddrive. I don't happen to know if the message was appearing prior to that.

Look at the output of dmesg. Prior to the device not ready message does it reference any device?

Does your second drive function correctly?

dmesg just repeats the same error message for 265 lines. There is no mention of a drive. If I issue the following:

[root@dude etc]# dmesg | sort -u

... it returns:

c in the drive.
Device not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive.
[root@dude etc]#

... you can see that's all that's in there.

BTW: The second drive is working perfectly. I have no "real" problems. Am just concerned about the error/warning message.

I removed the reference to the second drive from fstab and rebooted.

The error/warning message persists.

However, immediately after re-boot I re-issued dmesg. Here's the relevent excerpt (lines numbers added for clarity):

So is it complaining about one of the two CDROM drives? They both appear in Hardware Browser and I can successfully mount/read CDs in either drive.

This error is because of the CDROM, i have exactly same problem and I am also looking for solution

BTW does your CD RW works properly?

No the CDW does not work. It reads CDs just fine -- just can't burn them.
