Kernel + dependent kmod synchronization issues

I don't know how to word it better, but I almost borked my system today by accepting a kernel upgrade that did not include a matching VirtualBox-OSE kmod and Nvidia kmod update. Basically, if I'd installed and rebooted with the kernel update I'd have lost my video driver and VBox for God knows how long.

Shouldn't there be a warning somewhere for newbs that you could lose this functionality if there's no matching update for certain critical apps or drivers in your system?

Ideally I'd like to have the system wait to update the kernel until all the installed kmods have matching updates. Is this possible?
