Angry kernel configuration

Hi all,

I could create bzImage (2.4.26)in Slackware using make xconfig, make bzImage. This bzImage works fine. When i do this in fedora core 1(Its own kernel,I forgot the kernel version) and enable ext2,ext3 filesystems, on reboot I get the message 'Could not mount root fs'.How do i debug this.

Thanks in advance

Did you build ext2 support into the kernel, or leave them as modules?

Prepare an initial ramdisk image for the newly complied kernel and modify grubs config file to include it as well.

#mkinitrd /boot/initrd-kernel-version.img kernelversion
eg
#mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11.img 2.6.11

in grubs config something like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11 ro root=/dev/hd??
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11.img

Also make sure you are passing the correct root parameter to the kernel.
eg root=/dev/hda2 if / is in the second hdd partition.

Basically you may not need initrd image if ext2/ext3 was built into the kernel and not as modules but there are other things that may need it.
