kernel compiling with make=0 error

I am trying to compile the linux kernel with argument O (Capital O)
$ make O=$HOME/btc
Code:
  GEN     /home/bond/btc/Makefile
scripts/kconfig/conf --silentoldconfig arch/x86/Kconfig
  Using /home/bond/linux-2.6 as source for kernel
  /home/bond/linux-2.6 is not clean, please run 'make mrproper'
  in the '/home/bond/linux-2.6' directory.
make[1]: *** [prepare3] Error 1
make: *** [sub-make] Error 2

Did you run "make mrproper" first?
