kernel compile - no /usr/src/linux dir

im about to upgrade from 2.4.22 to 2.6.2 on a slack9.1 box, and i go into /usr/src, and it shows no linux dir.
it has:
linux-2.4.22
linux-2.6.2 (just created)
pcmcia-cs-3.2.5
rpm
and thats it
and this is as root, and done with ls -a
i dont want to continue, because i dont know enough about how linux loads stuff to ensure that it'll boot next time

the "linux" directory is typically just a symlink ..
and figuritivly speaking if you did have one it would have been pointing to linux-2.4.22 but since its not, then don't worry about it ...
just skip that step and move on to making the symlink to the 2.6 folder with the following :
ln -s linux-2.6.2 linux
of course this is the command you would type if you were located in the /usr/src folder, if your not then type complete paths ...
