Kernel Compilation configuration

Hi members,

I would like to ask one thing about kernel compilation though I am able to find many material on kernel compilation its little bit confusing me..I have downloaded kernel 2.6.15-Fc5 kernel.tar.gz I have copied this to /home directory. After untaring this I have typed

make menuconfig

I saved the default configuration(I havent selected any option) and started compiling.Whenever I compile with the default kernel configuration enabled Its throwing some error when booting the kernel. Is there any ready to use .config so that I can use that to enable the required features(for a desktop) as in-built and as modules during kernel configuration before compiling it.

Kindly provide me info about this kernel configuration.

Thanks,

not sure you wanted this,
but you can update your kernel with this command much more easily ( I see FC5)

yum install -y kernel

You can either do a kernel update like w3bd3vil using precompiled kernels. Either using yum or apt or with a gui tool for yum or apt like yumex or synaptic. Great way to to update the kernel. If you wish to try to build your own check out this post and use the orginal kernel config file in /boot as your starting point. One of the nice things about Redhat and clones.

Adding Patch and Compiling

Hi!

Thanks for your reply,

I agree that yum install is the very decent way to update the kernel, but I am tring to add a patch to the new kernel the one I have downloaded(tar.gz) and I want to compile the same after adding the patch.while this compilation I am just looking for some ready .config file which will configure my kernel for each and every feature.

Whether I can use this /boot .config file for configuring to enable selected options in the kernel.

Brian1 kndly provide me the link that you mentioned in your post.

What kind of patch are you applying. Is the patch for that kernel you are trying to patch. Some patches are version specfic. Just the let you know.
