kernel compilation/building howto

Hello there.
I wondered if there is something like "Kernel detailed compilation/building HOWTO". Must I read the sources to understand the targets of the compilation process, or can I somehow get away with this?
In particular I want to know what exactly makes "make modules_install". Google gives much to read, but none of the sources explains this exactly.
A help will be appreciated.

I think this will help you a little bit.
Quote:
make modules (builds all the kernel modules)
make modules_install (installs the modules)

You missed out "make menuconfig" at the start

Seriously, acpi, it's actually really easy to compile a kernel. Just identify the hardware you've got & hunt through the kernel until you find it. Then enable support for it.

A handy shortcut is to check what modules you're running with your current kernel, and make sure your new kernel has support for those modules built in

Neat sense of humor, Boby. I've rebuild the kernel several times, and used it after that(successfully indeed).
But I expected something like: "make modules_install copies XXX from YYY to ZZZ".
Anyway thanks for your concern mates.
Good luck!
