Question kernel 2.6.7 configuration question

I am a linux newbie puttering around. I downloaded and installed kernel 2.6.7 and tried installing module-init-tools but get a module function not installed error. I checked google and found something about config_modules not being configured. I tried make menuconfig when compiling the kernel but cannot find the config_modules option. Any hints? Thanks in advance.

Look into 'Loadable module support' and make sure you have 'Enable loadable module support' set to Y.
