KDM won't start KDE - Any thoughts?

I just recently used the KDE 3.1RC2 sources to upgrade my SuSE 8.1 system. KDM seems to function fine, with the new liquid theme I installed and all. I can start KDE if I go to runlevel 3 and startx. KDM recognizes any changes made to it via the KDE control pannel. When I select a user and enter the correct password the login prompt goes away, and I'm left with a cursor over a blank background.

I had some problems during the install where I noticed, after a ./configure, that I needed to install a dev library. I would use Yast2 to install the library and proceed. But SuSEConfig would hang on the KDM3 config and I would have to kill it.

I also had some problems after the install with setting the KDEDIR and QTDIR variables and ended up using a symbolic link from the path of the old directories to the new ones.

Which one of these things crippled my kdm and how do I fix it.

Don't know if you still have the problem, but this might help.
