KDM & KDE setup for computer ILliterate people
 

Hi all

I need to setup a computer for a client. Seeing that the user aren't exactly computer literate, I need to make things VERY simple. But I've run into a few difficulties:

(1) The KDM login screen has got a lot of buttons: Users, Adminstration, Login, Menu. Is it possible to change the way the screen looks so that you only have the username and password text boxes and the login button?

(2) When KDE starts, I need it to autostart my own application. I've done this by putting a symbolic link to the binary in the ~/.kde/Autostart directory. But I now also need KDE to end the session (logout) when this program exits. How can I do this?

(3) I want to keep the desktop totally uncluttered. I've removed all the icons etc, but the KDE taskbar is being difficult. How can I get rid of it completely?

Any info/advice is welcome!

Kcontrol allows you to configure things in kdm like user accounts shown based on group id, autologin, theme, etc.

Taskbar or kicker? The taskbar is for umm ofr your windows and stuff you can killall kicker or maybe end the process with ksysguard. Not sure how that would effect kde.

kcontrol does allow you to change some things like the greeting message and whether or not to allow shutting down the computer. But I cannot set which buttons is visible.

With taskbar I mean the panel that's usually at the bottom of the screen. So it includes the "system tray" and "pager" and the time display. I can delete all the icons and stuff from the bar, but I'd prefer to get rid of itself as well. I'll look into killing the tasks.

have you looked at using XDM instead? its been a while since I used it, but iirc it doesn't offer the KDM options at login.

if you're running such a clean desktop and don't want all the kde eye candy anyway, why not just use something like fluxbox, turn off the toolbar, and clean out the menu?
