KDE vs. Gnome

What is the real difference between the two? Aren't they just the support type for graphics? correct me if i'm wrong-i don't know what the rave is about.

so how well would KDE work on my computer-and can i get it for ubuntu?

processor: 3.33GHz
ram: 256md DDR2 SDRAM

SciYro 02-24-2007 08:14 PM

The only difference is that they both use very different base sets of libraries, specifically the GUI toolkit library.

EDIT: get more RAM

Hitboxx 02-24-2007 08:24 PM

KDE + Ubuntu = Kubuntu

phantom_cyph 02-24-2007 08:31 PM

Hitboxx 02-24-2007 08:34 PM

If you already have Ubuntu installed, just use Synaptic to install the KDE desktop environment..

KDE is better, more user friendly, more looking like Windows!

I would not be willing to buy used RAM unless I personally knew the seller. Props to Newegg, just my 2 cents

Gnome too is/may be user-friendly; it all depends on one's preferences... Please I don't want to start yet another war; I just want to say that the differences between the two are seen differently by each user.

I agree. I find Gnome much easier than KDE, its obviously all preference, and if you take the time to learn each one, both will be more than adequate. As for KDE being Windows-like, thats exactly the reason I don't like it.

Well it surely isn't more user friendly, does look a bit more like Windows, but definitely you can't say it's better :) maybe for you it is, but generally it's up to the user him/herself. Don't start a war by saying something like "X is better than Y" because most often it just isn't true :)

Plus usually to get all your wanted programs run, you do have both GTK and QT libraries installed, so if you're not a geeky guy wanting to have no extra files on the pc other than those really needed, it's all the same if you had both KDE and Gnome. Most modern pcs have enough resources to have both onboard, so you can switch between them every day if you want to.

phantom_cyph 02-25-2007 09:02 AM

i think i'll start a poll to see which one is more liked....

pixellany 02-25-2007 09:54 AM

Q: Which is better, Ford or Chevrolet?
A: Yes

Q: Which is better, Beef or Chicken?
A: Yes

I think you get the idea........
