KDE Shutdn Problem w/Monitor Power Mgmt

I'm a newbie and lost and that's just the beginning! After turning on monitor power management shutdown and reboot doesn't work properly. After selecting either shutdown or reboot it hangs at a blank screen with the mouse pointer only showing. If it matters I'm using KDE with an Samsung SyncMaster 753 and ATI X700 video card.

hmm pls state your distro.....and powermangement needs either acpi or apm running
so pls advice do you have a desktop (assumed yes) so check if acpi and acpid are running pls......Mandriva has a services section...needs root password to access where you can see what services are running.

(2) you also need a kernel or module that enables powermanagement but if acpi is running it must be so.

Perhaps I can answer those questions. Fastmach is my dad, he's not here right now, etc.

Currently he's running SUSE 10.0 and acpid is running. All of his power management settings seem to be working fine. The problem is that as long as he has power management enabled for his monitor, the machine hangs at KDE shutdown.

Oh, and he is using a desktop.

ok I do not use suse but if Dad runs the ¨top¨ command in a terminal he may find there is a process

kacpid

which I suspect is the kde acpi daemon.

this link refers to a laptop and yep I know you said desktop but it may be related
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linu...2002205471&w=2

for laptoppers there is a patch for kacpi apparently but for desktop I do not know.

2) Is dad using the ati driver or a generic? for xorg or XF86Free config file normally found
/etc/X11/xorg.conf or XF86Free.conf

pdeman2 05-16-2006 02:28 PM

Yes, he has kacpid running and he is using the proprietary driver from ATI. The generic one doesn't have full functionality.

i am running out of questions but one more....is powermanagement configged to on in the bios pls?

aus9 05-17-2006 07:23 AM

finally you may have time to peruse these bugs search list and see if any appear your issue

https://bugzilla.novell.com/buglist....ntent=shutdown

pdeman2 05-17-2006 11:27 AM

Yes, power management is configured on the bios. I played around with the settings, but nothing would change the situation. I also looked at the bug list for a bit, but I couldn't find anything too helpful.

If you have no other suggestions, then thanks for the help anyway.

aus9 05-18-2006 07:15 AM

well try a fresh post in the suse forum or the real suse site? also you could try google/groups?

pdeman2 05-18-2006 02:30 PM

Ok, thanks for the help. I'll relay this stuff to my dad.

I'll add a link here in the future to the thread that will probably be started on suseforums.net for any other LQers with the same problem.
