KDE - Samba problem

I am having no luck connecting to my Windows Machines when running KDE.

I am running RH8 which is up to date using the Redhat Network. I have configured LISA and RESLISA an started them both. When I issue the command smb://winpc I see the shared resources and am prompted for a user ID and password. They are accepted and yet when I actally open the shared resource the display is blank -- there should be files.

I will add that in Gnome and using nautllus I have no problem connecting in this manner.

I am new to linux as you can probably tell and so far I think I prefer KDE except for my inability to connect to the windows PCs.

Any help will be appreciated.

Bill

I had the same problem I think that in kde the /mnt/sharename must be mounted first. In order to do this you must from root at the prompt run mount -t smbfs -o username=unamehere password=upasshere //windowsmachinenamehere/windowssharenamehere /mnt/linuxdirnamehere

try that and then try what wasnt working before assuming samba is install right and check that by:

cd /etc/samba then run this command testparm get results

assuming this is where your samba is of course

in order to connect to the linux machine from windows your password credentials must be passed through samba translated then sent to linux verified make sure smbpassword file is correct and in sync with passwd

hope that helps

see what happens

Your solution works great thanks. This allows me to view the windows pc by using the mount point.

It would be nice though to be able to view adhoc windows pcs using the smb command in konquerer. If anyone has an idea why my display show zero files when I open the share I would appreciate hereing.

Thanks,
Bill

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the whole point behind the smb:// protocol in KDE is to provide a convenient way of connecting to any windose machine without having to explicitly mount its shares. I am able to successfully do this on our network. In addition to the LISA and RESLISA settings, make sure you set the proper windows username/password, and domain under Network->Windows Shares in KDE Control Center.

I agree with afshin.

Question... I do not have a Windows Shares entry under Network in my KDE control center. I am running RH8 - control center 3.0.3-8. I there another version?

same problem

I'm having the exact same problem. I can see shared folders in windows networks but I am unable to open them in konqueror. Is there any additional samba or LISa configuration that needs to be done? I am also running RH8 and do not have a windows share entry. Does anyone else have the same problem?

xsmbrowser looks like a good program but I still would like to use konqueror to browse my network files.

Here's what I think the problem is. Samba can scan the network and find the share names without logging into the actual shares. So when I try to access a shared folder it uses smbmount and stalls because i'm not running as root. Here is the output I get when I run it from a command line.

Password:
smbmnt must be installed suid root for direct user mounts (501,501)
smbmnt failed: 1

It waits for the password first which could be a problem, maybe it won't show the files because it's just waiting for a password that isn't needed.

smbmnt also needs to be installed suid root which it isn't, can anyone tell me how to do this?

Thanks for the help

Angry

I think I figured out how to set it suid root

chmod +s smbmnt
chmod +s smbmount

now I get this when I run smbmount

smbmount //croaker/movies /home/laptop
libsmb based programs must *NOT* be setuid root.
1812: Connection to croaker failed
SMB connection failed

weird, seems like it's contradicting itself
