KDE - No custom icons

I just installed KDE 3.2 from Slackware packages. I am trying to put icons on my desktop, but whenever I choose an icon that's not in the list with the Browse button, it stays as the default gear for an application. Why is it not showing the custom one?

maybe try refreshing the desktop, logging out, and/or check the permissions of the icon you want to use.
