kde/gnome: apps

hi everybody

hope this is not dumb...my brother just installed LM 8.0, told me he loves gnome. from what iŽve heard/read, iŽd be wanting to use konqueror and kmail, though. can i run these applications under gnome? or do i have to go with the respective applications gnome comes with, like nautilus and evolution?
this desktop/windowmanager/GUI thing still got me confused, sorry...coming from windows (sorry again but i had to start somewhere ;) i tend to get mixed up with what linux (the os) does, what distro-specific things (like the mandrake control center) do, and what a desktop etc does...i suppose there is solid information and explanations available about these things, so if it takes too long to explain, please just point me to where iŽd have to look!

thanx all,
chekov

I am almost positive that you can run these applications as long as you install the core package of the desktop enviroment it was meant for.

If you want to run kmail in gnome you would need to install kdebase. I am not entirely sure about this though, but there is a way to find out. When you run this command to install the package.

rpm -ivh kmail

It will tell you what you need to install. I might say something like..

kmail requires kdebase > 1.1.0

which means that you will need to install that package to get kmail to work.
