KDE and Konqueror

I'm not exactly sure what forum to ask about this in, so I figured this one was as good as any.

This morning I decided that I wanted to completely switch to Mozilla from Konqueror. Upon researching how to make Mozilla the default web browser and mail client, I realized that this could not be done (at least I couldn't figure out how).

I started asking myself why Konqueror was so integrated with KDE; this of course led me to ask myself what the difference between IE being so intertwined with MS OS's and Konqueror being intertwined with KDE is... aside from the fact that KDE is "free" and opensource.

Could someone please explain the difference to me? I really don't understand why one proprietary software on a platform is ok, but the other is frowned upon.

I'm not using KDE any more but If you think about it KDE will be nothing without konqueror, and KDE was designed to be like Winblows to be easy for new linux users.
