drop into command line mode, and try to star kde directly (without KDM).

ctrl+alt+F2 (or F6 / F5 in slackware)
login as root
telinit 3
exit
(login as normal user)
echo "startkde" > .xinitrc (dont iss the dot)
startx

does that work ?
if not, what does the error message say ?

Well, the wierd thing is there is no .xinitrc in this particular users directory? could this be the issue? I thought this file gets recreated?
