- 1. Yes... Mozilla, Galeon, Netscape, Links, Lynx... the list is quite endless. You should already have Galeon installed on your system.
- 2. .exe files are the domain of Windows. You can indeed run them, sort of, if you install WINE. Linux comes with it's own set of programs, though, and as with (all?) other *nix systems, you do not need to distinguish an executable file by it's extension.
- 3. First you'll need to mount the disk. Mandy 9 just so happens to mount it for you, so you'll likely need to do something like cp filename /mnt/floppy.
- 4. AOL do not officially support Linux, but there is indeed a program called PengAOL, but I cannot vouch for it's effectiveness... I don't use AOL. IIWY I would try a different ISP anyway.
- 5. You shouldn't. You should log in as a normal user and use the command su to temporarily change to root status. You exit from being a superuser with the exit command.
- 6. The JRE from SUN is freely available. It can be quite easy to install, but not always.
- 7. Yes it will. You need to edit your boot config file (lilo.conf or grub.conf) and tell it which partition to boot to. If it's lilo, then you'll need to run lilo again to put any changes into place.
- 8. here or search for whatever you're looking for and simply copy the picture somewhere and use that!
- 9. Depends on the filetype.
- 10. Type the command halt. You should never shut down your computer in that manner, regardless of the OS!
- 11. GAIM!
- 12. Some of these have already been discussed at length, and you really shouldn't post more than 1 question per thread.

wow these set of questions are perfect for a small Linux usability FAQ :-)
Why not have a proper FAQ on Linux usage here at LinuxQuestions.org. So often we find people asking the same questions again and again in the forum.
Based on the pattern of the questions asked here in the forum some of us can get together and work on a nice FAQ.
Can any of the moderators please comment on this ?

I can't boot into windows as I mentioned in a thou' posts. Yes, like everyone I get to a menu screen that opts me to run/boot LINUX FAILSAVE NT or FLOPPY. When I try to select NT from the boot menu I encounter an error that says, My system32/hal.dll is missing or corrupted. For the millioneth time I do have the file. I read somewhere that this is due to an error in the boot.ini. Follow ups...
I want to go in a folder called /mnt/NT so I can edit my boot.ini so I can input the correct partition number. It won't let me change it, someone suggested that I log in as root, but how do I do this while being able to open the boot.ini. : Please be specific when answering this, as I am new to linux.
About the browser thing answered earlier, I downloaded netscape like I said before I no nothing about linux. This file is a tar.gz. And I do not know how to open it. I am using KDE, on mandrake 9.0. Can someone give me detailed info on how to run this.
Thanks.

Well on your login screen just type your username as root and then your password, or if you can open a console, type 'su' then your passowrd, then cd to /mnt/NT and edit the file from there...
As for netscape, untar it (unzip) it to a directory, and there will be installation instrustions usually under 'readme' or 'install' also it might be good if you search the forums on 'compiling software'
If you run into more problems i will do my best to help...

I just wanted to add to this question, please don't ever just hit the power while Linux is running, its not Windows and can cause lots of problems with your system by doing this.

until you are comfortable using them, do not use tar.gz files. use RPM files only, as they are easy for newbies, and use mozilla (or galeon) instead of netscape. it's practically the same thing eanyway, but more suited to linux

Java installations
I'm a newbie and loving linux and starting to get the hang of it, somewhat. I'm using Mandrake 9.0 and through a few install, format, installs I finally got it running all my hardware pretty much. It has been running pretty good, but to my surprise has locked up on my twice while trying to certain appz. Now I just read not to just power off while linux is up and running, but what do you do when everything is locked up?
Anyhow to the question I wanted to ask. I'm trying to install Lime Wire. When I had Lindows "Yes i used lindows first, but it was limited" all i typed was "java -jar RunLime.jar" and it installed. Now when i tried this in Mandrake I got "no such command"? So i figured i needed to install the package from sun java j2re 1.4.1.01. I did that, and it seemed to install fine. But when i tried to type that command again it still gave me the same message. So I tried "sh runLime.sh" and got a little excited thinking i figured something out, but, there is the message again except this time "Line 14: java: no such command". so obviously even in the .sh file it still runs the java command. So now that i've typed more than i needed to, to ask this question, any suggestions?
BTW: It's all the help i've been getting through linuxquestions that got me running mandrake so well. Thanx

Most likely, the problem is that the "partition(X)" entries in boot.ini are not pointing the correct location of your NT partition. This is probably due to partition changes made during the installation of one of the operating systems.

You probably won't be able to change it even as root, as NTFS partitions are normally mounted read-only. Linux does not fully support NTFS, and writing to an NTFS fileysystem is considered "experimental". You risk data loss or total fileystem corruption if you choose to do so.
Boot into NT with a Windows boot disk and edit boot.ini from there.

A .tar.gz file is an collection of files which have been archived together with the "tar" utility and then compressed with the "gzip" utility. The resulting .tar.gz file is quite similar to a Windows .zip archive. That said, here's what you do with it:
1. Create a temporary directory somewhere and copy the .tar.gz to that directory.
2. "cd" to the directory and run the command:
tar -xzvf filename.tar.gz
This will uncompress the tar archive and then extract the individual files from that archive. Once the files are extracted, look for a README file or other documentation files for specific installation instructions.
